Encode Programming

Inspired by Algorithms of Oppression by Professor Safiya U. Noble

How have humans, past and present, hard-coded biases and oppressive values into our technology and designed objects?

How are AI systems and search engines just reinforcing structural inequality in the form of data and pixels?

These are just a couple of questions that our Encode programming asks. Based on the profound and pioneering work of Professor Safiya Umoja Noble and her book Algorithms of Oppression, and incorporating critical making activities, we continue to engage in collaborative research to bring together our community members and critical makers to respond to these ideas and questions.

These projects will accumulate, starting with the Encode kick-off that took place in February of 2020, continuing with the Algorithms of Oppression Book Club, and concluding with a final exhibition in 2021. In response to COVID-19, Feminist.AI’s programs will act adaptively and responsively to ensure our community’s healthy and safety when establishing the physical or digital forms of this exhibition.
